There aren’t many animals that will alert you to their presence the way a skunk will and we have all four species of skunks right here in the Sonoran Desert. Skunks are nocturnal opportunistic eaters and will sometimes make their dens beneath buildings, such as someone’s home. This can make a nightly garbage run a truly awful experience if you run into one.

Due to the seriously offensive smell of their spray, skunks only have one natural predator: the great horned owl. This means that skunks are more common than most people would think out here in the desert. A couple ways to tell if a skunk has been near or around your home are if there are a number of small divots in the dirt around your property or if you find feces containing small berries, insect parts, and fur. If you encounter a skunk, don’t panic. They will usually give you plenty of warning before they spray you, such as huffing and stamping their feet. However, if you try to capture it or scare it away on your own, you may quickly regret it.
